Can you explain the inclusion of vitamin A? My impression was that this is not lacking in the western diet, and that too much can cause problems. I am impressed with your thinking so would like to understand this decision.
Hi Lee,
Vitamins A, D3, E, and K2 are the four fat-soluble vitamins that our bodies need. They are often dependent on each other for their functions.
For the sake of this formula, Vitamin A is required by both D3 and K2 for proper metabolism. Having optimal levels of D3 and K2 will naturally increase the need for Vitamin A because they influence each other's metabolism and breakdown. This is why we have included 3000 IU of Vitamin A in this formula.
Severe deficiency of Vitamin A (like the kind causing night blindness and infertility) is not common in America. Anyone taking 10,000 IU of preformed Vitamin A daily from animal sources should be perfectly fine. Even higher doses may be fine if you are taking the other fat solubles with it. So, the 3000 IU added to the formula is just to meet the higher demand for Vitamin A created by the optimal levels of D3 and K2.

Is the vitamin d3 synthetic or naturally occurring?
Hi Thy,
The D3 is derived from natural substances. It is not synthetic.

The Vitamin D is 5000 IU -- I'm reading that body tolerance for Vitamin D is up to 4000 IU. Can you safely use this for a long period of time or just short periods to get your Vitamin D level up?
Hi Lisa,
The 4000 IU per day is not upper limit of body tolerance.
Doctors regularly give intramuscular injections of 100,000 IU monthly or sometimes even 500,000 IU (twice a year) to those who are very severely deficient. These maga-doses should only be administered under close medical supervision and always in the presence of adequate Vitamins A, K2, and Magnesium.
The 4000 IU is what's generally believed to be a safe and effective amount for daily use.
If you're starting from a place of severe deficiency, we often suggest 10,000 IU daily for a month and then down to 5000 IU daily after that. After 3 or 4 months at that level, you should have your doctor do another blood test to check levels.
The dose you need depends on several factors:
1) If you're light skinned, you need less (or no) D3 supplementation in the summer time
2) If you are overweight or obese, you will need more than a slim person
3) If you do not get much summertime sun exposure, you will need more D3
4) If you are deficient in the A, K2, and especially Magnesium, you will struggle to raise D3 to optimal levels.
Taking 5000 IU daily is generally regarded as safe, provided you have optimal levels of Vitamins A, K2, and the mineral Magnesium. Test a few months later and if your blood levels are higher than 80, you can back off by taking 5000 IU on just weekdays and skipping weekends. This in effect gives you an average of 4000 IU per day for the week. Most of us here at Innovix take 5000 IU, but we have someone who needs 10,000 IU daily to maintain optimal numbers. Everyone is different. Only way to tell how much you need long term is to test once or twice after supplementing. After that, no need to test.
Sincerely,
